The Veggie Garden Update

Well actually it's the "lack of veggies" gardening update.  Let me refresh your memory with this post where Sienna planted out the veggie box and I was hoping to harvest some delicious veggies.  I have always had the little fences up around the box to protect them from the chickens jumping in however we haven't had chickens since January this year when we lost them in those scorching 40 degree days.  Something was eating the lettuce so I then put two forms of plastic wire around the sides and over the top and around the sides it overlapped so I figured possums or something wouldn't get in however I was wrong. Bit by bit our veggies disappeared night after night.  We will be going back to the drawing board.

Sienna watering in the veggies back in August.

This is the state of the garden with the two layers of plastic netting
which wasn't good enough to keep the veggies safe.

Overnight something ate about 10 spring onions, celery anything that was left.

The possums were keen to get through this.

  1. Good job Sienna despite a "visitor" Hope you work out what it is and can make a plan. Sad you lost chickens during summer. That is one of my biggest fears. What happened exactly? My chickens all have Chicken Pox at present, they are not happy girlies :(

    1. Honestly I think a snake may have attacked one and then the heat got the other one. I don't like to think of it but one night I heard a lot of noise and flapping at the chicken coop and then 2 days later one died and then 10 days later the 44 degree heat was too much for the other. Hey it was too much for me and I was inside in the air conditioning. I've been using ice cubes in the water so the water doesn't heat up during the day too. Kathy

    1. We've now got chickens again and it feels good to have fresh eggs and the kids love them particularly Sienna. Kathy

  3. Bummer. I have mice and rats that eat new seedlings sometimes in the veggie patch they can get through any size netting making them a right menace. Looks like you have created a great possum proof patch though.

    1. Think your probably right Liz. The thing is with my new lettuce we planted the whole thing was clean gone the next day, and then another one and another one. Kathy

  4. Kathy I really feel for you. There is nothing more demoralising than something eating all of your hard work. We battled on with our patch for years with Kangaroos and possums or rats getting into it seemingly overnight just when everything was looking so good. We put in possum traps and caught quite a few of them and had them relocated but still something else or another possum would replace it. The only difference now is that we just put in new vermin proof fencing and are now growing so many things that losing a few plants to the odd animal is not quite as devastating. Hope you can find a solution, you may have to net over the top? x

  5. Oh dear! I hope you find out what is eating the veggies!

We had a veggie patch harvest 2 years in a row then we got new dogs and that was the end of our veggie patch which is now just an empty piece of land
